The brief
Fire Safety and Specialist Storage
We were appointed to design and construct a 1-hour-fire-rated, vault-like structure to house the client’s new silo system – a critical part of their production process for pre-fabricated polystyrene buildings.
The structure needed to meet strict fire safety requirements and allow for both immediate installation and future maintenance access.
what we did
Precision Engineering for a High-Spec Build
We engineered a bespoke steel frame structure featuring a 14-metre clear span to comfortably accommodate the silo system. Integrated lifting beams were designed into the frame to support both the installation phase and any future maintenance needs.
To achieve the 1-hour fire rating brief, we adopted a two-fold approach: a site-applied fire-resistant surface treatment was applied directly to the exposed structural steel, followed by the installation of an insulated, fire-rated cladding panel system. This created a fully enclosed vault with certified fire protection.
The cladding phase presented particular challenges. Each wall panel was installed as a single piece from floor to roof, requiring precise handling. Our team used a ‘Cladboy’ vacuum lifting tool to ensure safe, accurate installation without damaging the panels. The Cladboy is a vacuum lifting tool that attaches onto the lifting equipment; once attached, the equipment is then connected to the panel, facilitating a safe, smooth lifting operation.
Additional trimming steelwork was added to support ducting and sprinkler access, and a removable section of steelwork was incorporated to enable silo installation after the main structure was in place.

The result was a precision-built, fire-rated vault that fully supports the client’s production requirements, both now and in the future. With robust structural design, integrated safety measures, and a practical layout, the final build offers durability, compliance, and long-term functionality in one tailored package.
